AFS in New Zealnd
AFS New Zealand awarded its first fellowships in 1947 and has since grown to an organization with around 5000 volunteers in over 40 local chapters. The volunteers are responsible for the welfare of students and families in their area and arrange functions, orientation activities and fundraising activities.
Program Content
The short program is a nine-week program for high school students. It consists of a home stay and some school attendance. As this program runs during New Zealand school summer holidays there is only limited time at school. However, volunteers organize alternative activities for students, this may involve taking part in a community service project.
Most schools also offer many extracurricular activities. Students may have the opportunity to observe and learn local crafts, Maori culture and New Zealand history. They will also be able to participate in sports and outdoor activities and are encouraged to get involved with clubs and activities in their host community.
Upon arrival students will be met at the airport and then travel to their hosting community. AFS New Zealand provide arrival and end-of-stay orientations by experienced volunteers from the local chapters.
