Situated in the heart of Central America, Honduras is the second largest country in the region. Honduras is dominated by two large mountain ranges that run from the Northwest to the Southwest.

Eighty percent of the land is mountainous and is therefore unable to be cultivated for agricultural purposes. Beautiful rain forests cover much of these mountain areas. Honduras relies solely on the fertile lowlands in the North for its agriculture. This region is dominated by banana, tobacco, cotton and coffee plantations. Agriculture is the main source of employment for Honduran people, providing work for over half the population.

The Caribbean coastline of Honduras is famous for its endless, white-sand beaches.

Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, is spread over hilly terrain. It is a beautiful city with windy, paved alleys, and Spanish-colonial architecture and churches, some built as early as 1592.

The climate is generally tropical, and varies according to altitude. There are two seasons; summer which is dry from November to April and winter which is rainy from May to October.

AFS in Honduras
AFS in Honduras has a National Office. Chapters are located around the country and participants have access to support through volunteers in the local communities.

Host Schools
The school year consists of 40 weeks commencing in February and finishing in November with a two week term vacation. There are 7 classes daily that are of 45 minutes duration. All students are required to wear a uniform. The subjects given to students relate to the future direction of the student, which generally covers college preparation, commercial education or secretarial preparation.

In order to graduate, school students are required not only to pass all classes but must also complete 144 hours of social work. The purpose of the social work is for students to understand the special economic reality of Honduras and Latin America. This is achieved by helping poor communities in various areas including education, health, assisting to improve housing conditions and the general environment.

Extra curricular activities include sports, band, theatre and religious meetings.

Host Families
Honduran families are generous, friendly and eager to help their AFS students in all respects. As AFS Honduras explains, even people of humble circumstances will share whatever they have to make you feel welcome. Generally, Honduran families are traditional and parents are quite strict and protective of their children.
