The Argentine Republic is located on the southern most extreme of South America, shaped as a triangle. From tropic to arctic, Argentina’s landscape is a dazzling display of beauty.
AFS in Argentina
AFS in Argentina hosts around 200 students from 20 countries every year through its 38 chapters, which are run by volunteer returnees and former host families. Each student is provided with a contact person to provide support and counsel throughout the program period. All students participate in an arrival orientation in Buenos Aires on arrival, a week long regional meeting or short term exchange, and an end of stay in their local area. Local chapters also organize casual activities and get together for their hosted students during their exchange.
Host Schools
Most AFS students attend public coeducational secondary schools. The school year starts in mid March and ends in early December, with a winter vacation of 2 weeks in July. Students attend classes either in the morning or the afternoon, not both. Extra curricular activities are limited.
School in Argentina provides fascinating opportunities for AFS students to study subjects that are not available at home as well as the opportunity to learn more about Argentina and the Spanish language. School is also a great place to make new friends.
Host Families
The family in Argentina is a very close unit. Parental decisions are respected and followed. Parents expect their children to tell them what their plans are, where they are planning to go, with whom and at what time they plan to be back home. It is common for many families to have grandparents living with them at their house. In a way, it is very similar to our Chinese culture the way parents and children are related.
Food in Argentina is known to be delicious, especially when it comes to meat ! Barbeques are very common.
