Canada is the second largest country in the world covering the northern half of the North American continent except for Alaska. Canada is a vast and varied land with the Rocky mountains, central Canada, the rugged coasts, sandy beaches and fertile valleys of the eastern seaboard and its very cosmopolitan cities.

Canada’s large urban areas are multi-cultural and are home to people from all over the world – so AFS students fit right into the international environment. In smaller towns a foreign student is welcomed with open arms with the community eager to learn about their culture and customs.

Canada was originally settled by both the French and the English. Provinces in Canada will have either French or English as the predominant language.

Because of the vastness of Canada the climate varies considerably from province to province. Winters are generally cold, many areas having freezing conditions and heavy snow.

AFS Interculture Canada has its national office in Montreal, Quebec.

Host Schools
Canadian schools are comprehensive, meeting the needs of children of all ages in the community, often in the one building. Students with aims towards university or who are undertaking vocational training will be in contact with each other, even though they may be in different programs.

Extra curricular activities include clubs for different academic subjects, various hobbies and activities which may include band, orchestra, newspaper and drama. There is also an opportunity to join or help manage a team for sports. Student government provides an opportunity to take an effective role in the formation of school policies.

Host Families Canadians tend to be quite private people and there are often rooms reserved for specific use. Supper or dinner is the main meal of the day. This is the time for the family to get together before each goes on to their individual activities. Each member of the family is expected to share in the housework.
