AFS Community Service Program in China
The CSP (Community Service Program) is co-organized by AFS Hong Kong and AFS Germany in Shanghai. It offers participants the opportunity of project placement available in Shanghai or outside Shanghai of China. Placement includes:
In Shanghai:
1. The Jane Goodall Institute – Roots & Shoots Shanghai (environmental program)
2. New Vision Foundation for Disabled Peoples
3. Migrant Children’s School
Outside Shanghai:
4. Xiuning Tecsun Pingmin Primary School – Anhui Province (安徽省)
5. Ruth Walter Chungba Primary School – Tibetan Plateaus, Sichuan Province (四川省)
Program Highlight:
1. 5 months in duration with local host family (for placement in Shanghai). The 6th month can be used as a travel month or participants can choose to continue with the project and home stay.
2. 40 hours of Mandarin training.
3. Live at the school with own bedroom, including shower and hot water (for placement outside Shanghai)
4. 1-2 participants maybe placed (including other overseas participants) per organization.
Program Supports:
- AFS will provide arrival, mid-stay and pre-return orientation
- Language training by the Chinese Teachers Association.
- Designation of a Chinese mentor and first friends to help with daily life and cultural adjustments.
Applicant must complete the attached preliminary application form as well as stating the placement preferences and return it to AFS Hong Kong for selection process. In addition, participants are required to the following during the selection process:
1. Motivation Letter written in English (describing the reasons for joining the project)
2. Attending a telephone interview conducted by AFS Germany in Shanghai
3. Signing program agreement before departure
Upon receiving application, we will provide details of the placement projects as well as the selection guideline for participant preparation during the selection process.
The decision will rest with AFS and the participant will be required to complete detailed AFS application and health forms at later stage.
