AFS Overseas Community Service Program – Brazil
Whether you’re in the marketplace, at the beach, deep in the jungles, or in the streets, you’ll quickly discover that no one else celebrates life like the people who brought you the bossa nova he Brasileiros! This Portuguese-speaking country is friendly, colorful, and captivating.
Brazil features the Earth’s largest river system, extensive virgin rain forest, and expanses of untouched tropical forest. Family life is strong, with immediate and extended family members nearby. The most famous Brazilian holiday is Carnavale, which combines a Roman Catholic festival with celebrations of African ancestry. Soccer is the most popular sport, and Brazilian teams are always among the men’s and women’s World Cup contenders.
Program Highlight:
Volunteer work on internship basis at NGO’s or governmental projects. Family homestay is provided in most of the cases, but participants can be also placed in the CPO.
2 weeks of language studies (Portuguese) upon arrival in Rio de Janeiro only for those who do not have a basic knowledge of Portuguese. During these first two weeks, as a complement to the language classes, an arrival orientation is provided and visits to NGO’s and/or lectures about Community Service in Brazil are offered.
Available in urban metropolitan areas and their outskirts as in interior rural areas.
